Pictures of Ballyworkan Orange Hall after the arson attack
FIRST Minister Ian Paisley and Security Minister Paul Goggins came and saw the horrendous fire damage to Ballyworkan Orange Hall - and now the Order wants action after six attacks on Portadown halls in recent months.
The two men said how horrified they were at the gutted interior of the hall at Whiteside's Hill, between Portadown and Tandragee, with Dr Paisley calling for changes in legislation so that the lodges could restore their halls as quickly as possible.
"We sympathise with you. It's a terrible problem," he told the Orange gathering at Ballyworkan on Monday morning, which included everyone from Grand Master of Ireland Robert Saulters to Ballyworkan LOL 19 Worshipful Master Edward Tweedie, Grand Secretary of Ireland Drew Nelson to Portadown District Secretary David Jones.
The narrow road was blocked by cars from the great and the good on the provincial and local scene. Yet - despite the show of concern - the Orangemen were not convinced.
"OK - it's good to see them take the time and call with us," said Ballyworkan Deputy Master David Tweedie. "This is the sixth hall in the Portadown District to be torched or vandalised since August. There's no sign of a let-up by the republicans who did this.
"There's no sign of compensation coming through for any of the halls - and for halls wrecked and damaged long before that.
"We want the PSNI to place Orange Halls higher on the security list. And we want the bureaucracy changed so that compensation can come through."
Mr Saulters said, "As things stand, we have to wait for a certificate from the Chief Constable, with insurance companies involved and then the Northern Ireland Office (NIO) stepping in. It's a cumbersome system and has to be changed."
Portadown District Master Darryl Hewitt commented, "We want what you would call the direct route over compensation. That is, the Orange Order claiming direct from the NIO and speeding things up."
Ballyworkan is now added to the other five Orange Halls in the Portadown area damaged to differing degrees since August, and it is among the worst.
Those at Seagoe, Tamnificarbet (Lurgan District), Bocombra and Ballygargan were all torched, with Edenderry superficially damaged in an attempted break-in, which was unreported.
A kitchen window at Ballyworkan was smashed during Friday night-Saturday and flammable liquid poured in. The kitchen was totally gutted and the main hall extensively damaged.
The Tweedies - with a long family link with the lodge - were devastated when they went on Saturday morning to survey the damage.
"It's heartbreaking," said Edward Tweedie. "Not only is the hall gutted inside, but we have lost historic 100-year old Lambeg drums and our banner. We can re-build the hall and we will re-build it bigger and better. But these are artefacts we cannot replace."
Portadown District Secretary David Jones said that - as Security Minister - Mr Goggins must pour more resources into protecting Orange Halls. "They are an integral part of the community and have a low security priority.
"We cannot expect 24-hour patrols, but there are other ways and means of protecting them, and it comes as no surprise that nobody has been made amenable to the law after so many have been burned."
Mr Hewitt estimated that up to 25 per cent of halls in Portadown District had been burned.
"The Orange Order has been doing its utmost to improve its image and as District Master I condemn this outrage without reserve," he added. "But so many have been torched that it's beginning to sound like a stuck record. This is pointless, and as is any thought of tit-for-tat attacks on, say GAA, property. It served no purpose."
