AN Indian restaurant in Gilford is kicking off the new year by making a generous donation to the charity, Action Cancer.

At no cost to the customer, Babu’s Restaurant will be making a 50p donation on every delivery order that is made and in the first year it is expected that £3,000 will be raised for the charity.

Action Cancer is an entirely local charity that provides breast screening, MOT health checks for men, support for those affected by cancer and a mobile unit, the Big Bus.

Kerry Anderson, corporate fundraising officer said, “We are delighted to have the support of Babu’s Indian Restaurant and this project is innovative as we have never had a fundraising initiative like this from a restaurant.

“This is a great example of how the business sector can do something simple yet extremely effective to support a cause they feel passionate about. The weekly donations mean Action Cancer has regular income and over the period of one year we will be able to provide over 80 health checks or almost 40 breast screenings, any one of which could be life saving.”

Upper Bann MP David Simpson attended the recent launch of the partnership and is in full support of a local business giving something back to its community.

Mr Simpson said, “Action Cancer provides an invaluable service to cancer patients and their families. Although Action Cancer welcomes all donations, long term commitments of this type are invaluable as they enable the charity to plan ahead.

“Babu and his family are totally committed to making weekly donations toward an annual goal of £3,000. I believe they are to be highly commended for this magnificent gesture. It also serves as a marvellous example to other businesses who may wish to make a similar commitment within the confines of their individual, financial capacity.”

Babu, proprietor of Babu’s Indian Restaurant said, “As so many people know someone affected by cancer we are pleased that to do something positive and it’s satisfying to know that regular donations make such a big difference for Action Cancer. We hope that some other restaurants and local businesses will be encouraged to support in a similar fashion.”
