Milford House curator to give Ballyhegan talk
STEPHEN McManus, curator and keeper of collections at Milford House Museum, will be in Kilmore Parish Centre on Wednesday, February 20 at 8pm.
As the custodian of more than 55,000 items in the collection held by the museum, Stephen is well placed to do justice to the title of his talk: The McCrum Family of Milford, Armagh.
The McCrums of Milford can define their ancestry as being part of the colonising wave of, what has become known as, the Ulster Scots.
The McCrums, it is understood, settled in the rural community around Middletown - most likely in the early Seventeenth century. William McCrum, with his brother John, came to Milford and started the McCrum business empire: of flax processing, linen weaving and flour milling. William’s son R.G. McCrum distinguished himself as a most astute and innovative businessman and in addition was noted for his progressive outlook in social matters. This was seen in his initiative in housing his workforce in the model village of Milford including social and sports amenities, as well as serving, in leadership roles, on various public bodies. In the next generation R G McCrums Son William was not noted for his application to business but contributed much to sport particularly association football. He is remembered as the inventor of the penalty kick. Two of William McCrum’s great grandsons, Robert and Mark McCrum, both writers and born and brought up in England, have been to Milford in recent years.
