Scarva Sunday school cooks up contest for children’s cancer appeal

A BAKING competition is being held next Friday, May 11, by St Matthew’s Sunday School, Scarva.

The contest, along with a table quiz and raffle, will take place in the village’s Orange Hall, and money raised will go to the Sunday school and children suffering from cancer.

The charities to benefit will be Cash for Kids which has teamed up with CLIC Sargent to raise much needed cash for the ‘Homes from Home’ appeal. Every week two children and young people in Northern Ireland hear the devastating news they have cancer, and the homes appeal aims to provide houses in Belfast within walking distance of the hospital to try and ease both the financial and emotional strain of travelling on parents.

The evening will begin with a baking competition which is open to all ages, and there will also be an under 12s section. The categories are farmhouse breads, cakes, traybakes/cookies, cupcakes and desserts. Certificates will be presented to placings in each category.

The judges are Fiona from Drumsallagh Cakes, Banbridge, and Marcel from the Cosy Teapot Café, Tandragee.

Entry is £5 per adult and £3 for under 12s for any number of items you wish to enter in any or all of the categories. The Orange Hall will be open to accept entries from 3pm on Friday, May 11 with a strict closing time of 6pm.

The table quiz will start at 7pm and the entrance fee is £2 per person.

A baking hamper prize has been provided by the children of the Sunday School and around 30 raffle prizes have kindly been donated by local businesses and individuals.

Tea and coffee will be provided during the evening and everyone will have the opportunity to sample the home baking on display.

Anyone not entering the baking competition is still welcome to go along to the quiz and raffle.
