EDENDERRY Primary School Girls’ hockey team collect the silverware at the recent ‘Mid Ulster Hockey Tournament’ on 13 March, hosted by Cookstown High School.
The girls all aged 11 and under battled through five tough qualifying matches.
The first match against Millington was a relatively comfortable 4-1 win for the EDENDERRY girls. Sarah Armstrong and Sarah Campbell (team captain) each contributing 2 goals.
These girls kept their sticks red hot throughout the tournament both scoring again in the second match against Spires Primary,
Armstrong claiming 1 and Campbell 2 to wrap up victory 3-0.
The last match before progressing through their group was against Magherafelt Primary.
Again starlet Sarah Campbell found the net during this closely fought contest.
Although by now the EDENDERRY girls’ legs were beginning to waver. With tired heads and red faces an inspiring Mrs Irwin, teacher and coach pumped the girls with an encouraging team talk to go into the semi finals determined to get that trophy.
The semi final was against Waringstown- a good strong team.
It was a very fast and exciting match but EDENDERRY girls fought hard for another 20 minutes and came through victorious with the winning goal from the team captain, Sarah Campbell.
The girls entered the final match against Maralin, tired but definitely determined to finish the job.
The crowd cheering them on from the sides lifted their spirits and after another 20 minutes of tough hockey the scoresheet was 1-1 with a brilliant last minute save from EDENDERRYS goalkeeper, Megan Quinn.
Maralin had already played extra time in their semi final and were totally exhausted and decided to concede the game rather than play extra-time!
After a team talk Mrs Irwin and the girls sportingly decided to share the shield with Maralin Primary.
“We have had a great day of sport fun here at Cookstown, with all the girls gaining valuable experience that will help them as they continue in their hockey at Junior High Level.” Said Mrs Irwin.
