THERE were three local winners at the annual Orange awards recently.

Presbyterian minister Rev Nigel Reid won the Chaplain’s Award at the annual ceremony. Rev Reid became minister of Tullyallen and Mountnorris Presbyterian churches around eight years ago. His sterling work and commitment has seen an increase in these congregations and the forming of a male voice choir. Even though he is the District Chaplain of Newtownstewart District, he has been very active in Markethill District, even conducting the Christianity Explored Programme and helping with the mini-Twelfth.

Gary Hutchinson (Mullabrack Hearts of Steel LOL No 10) won the Youth Development Award. Gary has been one of the Superintendents of Kilbracks JLOL 75, based in Markethill. He helps organise football matches, days out and trips to Scotland for the Juniors. Throughout his time as Superintendent, the numbers joining the Junior Lodge has steadily increased, with six new members in 2012 alone. Gary is also the youth convenor for his district and helps organise an annual five-a-side football competition for lodges and bands each year.

Keith Little of the Markethill Fiddle Orchestra was runner-up in the Individual Musician’s Merit category. Keith has been teaching the fiddle as part of the Ulster Scots group in Markethill for the last 10 years. Through this he formed a fiddle orchestra which covers a wide age range. The Lattery LOL 222 member continues to run the fiddle class in Co Armagh and has taught many people an instrument they may not have previously considered learning. His enthusiasm is second to none.
