TRANSLINK employees in Portadown Train Station have been rewarded with a Gold Award in an annual TIDY Northern Ireland awards scheme designed to ensure that local rail facilities are clean, tidy and environmentally-friendly.

Eight Translink stations scooped platinum, a further seven achieved gold standard while 10 stations received silver in this year’s awards results.

The TIDY Northern Ireland assessment categories include: general cleanliness, litter awareness, graffiti awareness, exterior maintenance, waste management, Translink brand profile, facility enhancement measures, community involvement, energy management and environmental communication. For a second year in a row, stations showed the best improvement across the ‘general vleanliness’, ‘waste management’ and ‘community involvement’ categories.

Translink Group Environmental Manager, Andy Bate, said, “We are delighted with this 2012’s performance that saw more stations than ever before enter the top Platinum and Gold award ratings demonstrating our employees’ outstanding dedication to providing a high quality, attractive bus and rail network for both passengers and colleagues to enjoy.

“These awards play an important role in our company-wide Go Eco strategy in which we strive for continuous environmental performance improvement.

“Attractive stations play a key role in encouraging more people to travel by bus and train and we look forward to continuing to work in partnership with TIDY Northern Ireland to ensure our facilities are maintained to the highest possible standards.

“We have seen many stations take extra steps to boost their environmental performance over the past year and I would like to congratulate everyone involved in delivering such a fantastic set of results.”

TIDY Northern Ireland’s Chief Executive Dr Ian Humphreys said, “It is wonderful to see more stations than ever being awarded the top Platinum and Gold awards for being so clean, tidy and environmentally friendly. These results are clearly a reflection of Translink’s commitment to continuous environmental improvement and TIDY Northern Ireland are currently working with Translink to enhance their facility environmental programmes ensuring better results in the future and the possibility of developing into Eco-Stations.”
