Week to show ‘there’s more to church than the Sunday services’

THOMAS Street Methodist Church is gearing up for its Love Your Church Week which starts this Sunday.

The aim is to encourage more people back to church and to highlight the range of classes and activities that are on offer.

Eddie Drury, one of the organisers, said, “We want to show people there is more to church than Sunday services. We have a whole range of clubs and activities going on every week at Thomas Street.”

The special week begins with a ‘Charlene’s Project’ breakfast which will be served in the Wesley Hall at 9am, rather than 9.30 as originally stated. The guest speakers will be Dickie and Janice Barr, whose daughter Charlene died of cystic fibrosis but whose spirit lives on in a school in Uganda which she was passionate about helping.

Donations can be made at the door and will go to Charlene’s Project. The breakfast will be followed by the 11am service.

On Sunday evening, Portadown man Sid Burrows, an ex-Linfield and Crusaders player, will lead a testimony service, starting at 7pm.

Meanwhile, on Friday it’s the Old Time Gospel Night in the Wesley Hall, with popular group The Harvesters, Mahon Praise Group and a sing-along with church organist Ryan Harris and church committee member Nigel Woods.

Admission is free but a retiring collection will be taken for church funds and for a project to drill water holes in Uganda, run by a church connected to The Harvesters.

On Saturday, all are welcome to a prayer morning which is being held in the upper room of the Wesley Hall form 9-1. And that evening, the youth club welcomes parents to an open night when they can go along and see the range of activities their children enjoy.

Next Sunday is the final day with a love service at 11am, when children from different groups within the church will be singing, and the popular puppets will be making an appearance too.

God’s Love is the theme of the BB Old Boys’ class at 3pm on Sunday and at 7pm, there will be a special service at Epworth Methodist Church to encourage people back to church on Sunday nights. Members of different churches on the circuit will be taking part and the service will be led by the Rev Kenneth Robinson.

Other events during the week include the Girls’ Brigade pampering night for mums and dinner for parents of the Company section boys of the Boys’ Brigade.

Monday evening’s meal at Zio’s is practically sold out, while leaflets and chocolate hearts will be distributed on the Tandragee Road on Thursday night in an outreach gesture.

For more information about any of the events contact Eddie on 07866273306 or Janet in the church office on 3836 1213.
