Album review: Ashes to Ashes

SALES of home perm kits have reportedly gone through the roof over the past few months and as actress Keely Hawes sports a rather fetching barnet of curls in 80s retro police drama, Ashes to Ashes, it seems television viewers are riding a wave of nostalgia for the decade which taste forgot.
But with the release of the soundtrack to the series they can re-create the 80s disco experience for themselves.
Following on from its predecessor Life On Mars, which was set in 1973, it's now 1981 in London and while fashion and musical tastes may have dramatically moved on to all things New Romantic, the importance of the music setting the scene for the programme has not.
It's evident from the albums's first listen that the producers have put a lot of consideration into selecting the tracks.
Kicking off with the title theme, Ashes to Ashes by David Bowie, the fast selling single of 1980, this song, as fans of the show will know, is integral to the programme but more than that, 27 years later it stands the test of time and is one of the album's major highlights.
Other tracks on the album include one of Duran Duran's most popular songs, Girls On Film, Love Action from synth-pop legends The Human League and The Clash's rabble-rousing punk version of I Fought The Law. There is also The Ruts track, Staring At The Rude Boys, which was recently covered by hardcore metal band Gallows. It then goes all French with Fade to Grey by Visage to the atmospheric Vienna by Ultravox.
Intercut with the programme's title theme and dialogue from the show (including some rather brilliant put-downs courtesy of DCI Gene Hunt played by Phillip Glenister), this is as far from a cheesy 80's pop album as you can get.
Instead the Ashes To Ashes Original Soundtrack features some of the best-loved alternative tracks from the beginning of the decade. A must-have album for fans and 80s music lovers.
