THE first pantomime performance is behind them (Oh yes, it is!) with the Gateway Theatre Group having staged its initial showing of 'The Sleeping Beauty' in a packed Portadown Town Hall on Thursday, January 14.
And it looks as if the 13 still to come will be sell-outs as the audience did anything but sleep as the fun and frolics flowed fast and furious at the popular Portadown venue.
It's the 27th annual panto production by the Gateway, with director Milli
e O'Kasili involved in every one of them - either as actor or director - and producer Nigel Dawson in his 22nd. And the standard is of the usual, consistent excellence.
After last year's rollicking adventure 'Robinson Crusoe', this year's is the romantic fairy tale of the princess who slept for 100 years and the handsome prince who sets out to awaken her. Will he arrive in time? We all know the answer to that one...
The cast has that familiar favourites look about it, although there are one or two debuts, notably Jayne Hamilton who plays the role of the evil Carabosse.
As they say, there is nothing like a Dame, and indeed few are like Eddie Drury, the proud postman who will be swapping his postie uniform for the outrageous garb of the panto dame traditions - and his daughter Ruth will become a boy as she plays The Prince. How confusing!
Lawrence Cinnamond and Elaine Hanvey play the King and Queen, Nadia Dinsdale is the Princess, while Kirsty Fleming and Marie Tiffney take on the roles of the comedy duo. Peter Cinnamond (Lawrence's son) follows the family tradition as the court jester, Simon Hylands is another debut actor as Lord Chamberlain, with Hannah Chambers the Fairy.
Deborah Fleming is again the choreographer and Ryan Harris is the musical director, spending all 14 performances at the keyboard.
As well as the 7.30pm performances for tonight (Friday) and tomorrow (Saturday, two shows including the matinee) the panto is staged Wednesday, Thursday and Friday during the next two weeks, plus the two Saturday shows.
