REVIEW: Inspired by a true story, American Gangster charts the rise of Harlem-based drug lord, Frank Lucas and the efforts of honest cop, Richie Roberts, to shut down the booming operation.
Based on Washington's gripping portrayal, Lucas was charismatic, calculating and cold-hearted in his pursuit of money but based those actions on a strict code designed to provide protection and prosperity to those close to the stylish gangster.
In contrast, Crowe paints Roberts as a man struggling in his personal life but determined to serve and protect as one of the few honest cops in the police force,
Themes of morality and corruption run rife through American Gangster and Scott enjoys examining the similarities and differences thrown up by his two leads - both of whom shine on screen.
Although the eventual meeting between Lucas and Roberts may not prove the equal of Al Pacino and Robert De Niro in Heat, it provides Washington and Crowe with further space in which to impress and leads to a satisfying conclusion that strengthens the suggestion that, under different circumstances, the two rivals could become firm friends.
Roberts may achieve his goals, in the main, thanks to brute force and bravura compared to Lucas' largely clinical style but both men take great risks in pursuit of the end line and these maverick moments only enhance the appeal of both the crime lord and the cop.
American Gangster, however, is much more than just a series of scenes designed to show off the acting chops of Washington or Crowe and Scott has assembled a wonderful cast of supporting players to tell a tale that sits comfortably alongside modern classics of the crime genre such as Heat, Donnie Brasco and Carlito's Way.
VERDICT: American Gangster the movie follows, in many ways, the Frank Lucas business model (albeit without the bloodshed) - get together a trusted and respected team then craft a product that blows away the competition.
