THE new 3G surface at Brownstown Park, which replaced the grass football pitch, was officially opened by the Mayor of Craigavon last week.

The pitch is part of a £1.5 million investment to upgrade facilities at Brownstown Community Centre which will start in September. The project will create a two-storey centre with two new meeting rooms and a dance studio, along with new changing accommodation and 50 additional car parking spaces.

Describing the pitch as an “excellent new addition” to the area, Mr Carson, said, “The pitch will bring many benefits with one in particular being that the playing surface is synthetic, meaning the pitch is playable all year round, and in almost all weathers. So the amount of football matches and training that can be played is a huge increase from the capacity of the previous grass pitch.

“This is certainly good news especially for local football teams. This investment indicates the council’s commitment to the needs of the local community. Local football teams have commented that their numbers have increased already thanks to the new pitch provision.”

The pitch has been welcomed by local clubs who use the facility. Portadown Youth football member, Nigel Armstrong, explained, “The pitch has an excellent surface and is a great asset. It means that Portadown Youth can now play their football in Portadown. For young people who are having their first experience of football it has made a tremendous difference - now we’ve got something to be proud of.”

Meanwhile, Karl Black from Rectory Rangers, said, “We are delighted with the new facility. It’s a great venue for young people to develop their football skills and for clubs to train.” To book the 3G pitch contact the council on 38 331964.
