THE local committee of the Portadown Cancer Research UK group has raised a total of £8,373.75 during 2012, it announced at its annual general meeting on Monday.

The money was raised through events such as quiz nights, street and shop collections, a ladies gourmet evening, a church concert, a golfing event, a sponsored kayaking event and even a collection at a motorcycle race!

Committee chairperson, Liz Cushnie, thanked her small but enthusiastic committee for all their hard work over the year. She also thanked friends and family for their continued assistance.

She especially paid tribute to the people of Portadown for their continued support and all the local businesses who have assisted and sponsored events over the year with particular thanks to The Yellow Door, Tesco, Inner Wheel, Armagh Road Presbyterian church and the in memoriam donations forwarded in lieu of flowers.

Cancer Research UK is the world’s leading charity dedicated to beating cancer through research. Millions of lives have been saved by discovering new ways to prevent, diagnose and treat cancer, and survival has doubled over the past 40 years.

They fund research into more than 200 types of cancer and with hard-working scientists here in N.I. and the UK they’re the single largest funder of Cancer Research. From the most common – such as breast, bowel, lung and prostate cancers – to rare types of tumour and children’s cancers, they support groundbreaking science that benefits everyone.

This vital research would not be possible without the support of people like the Portadown Local Committee and everyone who has generously supported them.

The Local Portadown Committee would welcome new members. If you would like to chat to someone about joining or helping in any way, contact Hilary on 38335607 or Liz on 38849121.
