Countdown on to start of Speech Festival
THE countdown is well and truly on to one of the most important events in Portadown’s calender.
The curtain goes up on Portadown Festival 2013 next Thursday (February 28) with the eagerly-awaited start of the Speech Festival.
The festival has grown so much it now lasts eight days and two leading adjudicators will be travelling across from England.
Over 2,000 entries have been received, there are several new teachers and the next Friday and Saturday nights will see five musical theatre groups performing each night. The following Monday will see several playlets and there will also be miming groups.
The adjudicators are as follows: Tish Nicholl from Oxfordshire, but born in Aberdeen, has worked in the UK and overseas. Tish has stage and television experience as a performer and director. She has a wide range of experience of teaching all age groups in schools, colleges and the business world.
Tish is a licentiate of The Guildhall School of Music and Drama. She has been to Portadown before and is really looking forward to her visit to Portadown where she made friends with many people.
Cally Foster from Buckinghamshire has enjoyed a fine career as a speech and drama specialist. She has been principal of her drama studio based in Buckinghamshire for 22 years and travelled to Europe, Sri Lanka, Hong Kong and the United Arab Emirates
She is an examiner for the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA) and adjudicator. She is also delighted to have been invited to Portadown and is committed to the festival.
The final night of the festival is March 8, starting at 7pm. All the winners will be heard on set poems and there will be a small variety of what happened during the week. The awards will be presented and there will be a cup of tea for everyone.
Programmes will not be available until after Tuesday, March 26 and are on sale at Campbell’s Jewellers and Hoy’s Butchers in Edenderry.

Organiser Elizabeth Pollock said, “The festival is so appreciative of all who help as volunteers. The festival would not run smoothly without these people during the eight days.”
