Family business still flourishing after 40 years
IT was 40 years ago this month that local man Brian McGurgan opened his insurance business in the Annagh area of Portadown.
Over that time, the family-run business has flourished and has recently expanded with the opening of a new branch in Union Street in Lurgan.
From being a ‘one-man band’ in its early days, Brian McGurgan Insurance now employs seven staff across its two offices.
Providing a quality, friendly and personal service to customers has been key to the company’s success and that ethos is continued to this day.
Family involvement has always been very important as well, with Brian’s wife Monica and children Ciaran and Lesa playing key supporting roles as the business developed.
Brian has also had a 40-year involvement with Annagh Utd Football Club as a player, manager and current chairman.
On Brian’s retirement, son Ciaran and daughter Lesa Judge took over the reins, and have maintained the emphasis on providing customers with a reliable, competitive and personal service.
Said Ciaran, “Given the current climate, business is good, and our intention is to grow the company more.
“I think the fact we offer both commercial and private insurance, and we are able to give customers the personal touch that comes with a family business, has helped us to maintain our clients.
“We would like to take this opportunity to thank both past and present customers for their support over the years as we would not be in business if it were not for them.”
The business provides all classes of insurance for both the private and commercial markets, including home, vehicle, employers’ liability and professional indemnity.
While both the Portadown and Lurgan offices offer a complete range of insurance services, the Portadown office specialises in commercial cover and the Lurgan office, currently trading under the name Davis Insurance, in personal cover.
General insurance services include instant cover, insurance claims, insurance quotes, legal cover, new for old cover, and no claims discounts.
On the home insurance side, services include buildings, contents, annual travel, caravan, buy-to-let, sports equipment, small craft, family protection and legal cover.
Commercial insurance covers employers’ liability, public liability, products liability, industrial, engineering, professional indemnity, pub, restaurant, hairdressers, surgery, wine bars, office, shop, goods in transit, farm, motor trade, plant inspection, computer and equipment, contractors all risks, guest house, property owners’ liability, nightclubs, casinos, boats and marine.
For those customers requiring vehicle insurance, the choice is equally comprehensive, with fleet, private cars, company cars, commercial vehicles, motorbikes, trucks, diggers, tractors, dumpers, excavation equipment, haulage, minibus, taxis and coaches all covered.
