AFTER introducing a new concept of a traditional bread table to Tesco, Irwin’s Bakery from Portadown has just been named as the supermarket’s Outstanding Supplier for January 2013, only the second award of its kind made in Northern Ireland.

Caoimhe Mannion, marketing manager at Tesco NI said, “We have introduced an Outstanding Supplier award, through which we will publicly celebrate and recognise the enormous effort our Northern Ireland suppliers put in for our customers.

“For January 2013, our Outstanding Supplier was Irwin’s Bakery. They have recently introduced a delicious new table bread selection which is exclusive to Tesco and has really captured our customers’ imaginations. By presenting shoppers with some of their favourite Northern Ireland breads on a simple wooden display table in front of them, they can enjoy the traditional sights and smells of the local family bakery right here in our supermarkets and hand-pick their selection.

“The enormous dark crusty Belfast Baps topped with a dusting of flour and the fragrantly scented cinnamon and raisin loaf are just two of the products which Tesco customers can’t get enough of. They not only look great but they also smell delicious, so they’re hard to resist.”

Stefan Szymura of Irwin’s said, “This is an exciting initiative for Irwin’s. Working closely with Tesco, we wanted to come up with a unique new way of presenting a range of traditional Northern Irish favourites. Having successfully trialled the bread table idea in three local stores, we now have 11 in place and hope to increase this to 20 Tesco stores. These breads represent Irwin’s local baking heritage at its best, so we’re thrilled that Tesco customers are responding so positively.”
