A PORTADOWN man has been overwhelmed by the support of local people after he completed the Belfast Marathon in memory of his friend who died of cancer.
Stephen Lindsay ran the marathon earlier this month in aid of the Ulster Cancer Foundation - the charity chosen by the widow of his close friend, Denis Bond, who sadly died of cancer two years ago.
Stephen completed the course in three hours and 53 minutes and was cheered on by his wife Lynda. Also standing on the sidelines shouting words of encouragement were his late friend’s wife, Heather, and their children, Kathryn and Andrew.
Stephen’s feat has so far raised £3,500, which will go to a ‘Forget Me Not Fund’ established by the Ulster Cancer Foundation in Denis’ memory.
“Running the marathon is something I’ve always wanted to do but never got round to it, so this year I was determined to run it and wanted to do it in aid of a worthwhile cause,” said Stephen.
“I inquired from Heather as to which charity she would like the money to go to and without hesitation it was the Ulster Cancer Foundation. The (charity’s) family support service has been a tremendous support to Heather and her two children - and to be able to raise money to help other families going through what they as a family have been through - kept me motivated both during my training and on the actual day.”
Stephen added, “People have been so generous and we have been overwhelmed by the support. If you would like to make a donation you can do so online at www.justgiving.com/Stephen-Lindsay2.”
