Translink and the international Eco-Schools award programme are encouraging schools in Portadown to join a two-week sustainable travel challenge this spring, cutting down on car congestion around school gates and boosting the health and wellbeing of participants.

More than 60 schools across Northern Ireland have already registered for the challenge which promotes walking, cycling, bus and train travel for the school run instead of car use.

Translink’s Ursula Kelleher says it’s a practical and engaging way of showing young people the environmental, safety, health and cost benefits of more active forms of travel.

“There’s been a great response to the challenge so far and with Spring fast approaching, we hope more parents and pupils will embrace the benefits of active travel. Teachers can also visit www.translink.co.uk/ecoschools and download a range of Key Stage 1 – 3 classroom resources.

Deadline for completed Translink Eco-Schools Travel Challenge entries is May13. Ring 028 9073 6920.
