BIRCHES: TWO lorry loads of rubbish, including tyres, wood and even a fish tank, have been removed from the Birches roundabout in the latest clean-up.
And Craigavon Borough Council is now warning that "enough is enough", and they will be coming down hard on offenders.

Environmental wardens will begin patrolling the area and anyone caught littering will receive a fixed penalty notice of £50, while anyone caught commercial dumping could face a fine of up to £2,500.

The roundabout, just off the M1 at the Birches, is a stopping off point for drivers and because of its isolation has become a dumping ground for general waste and lunch packaging.

Over the years, the council has continued to clean it up, and to foot the bill for doing so.

Vice-chairman of the environmental services committee, Alderman Sidney Anderson, said, "Enough is enough. We've seen all sorts dumped here – from dead sheep to tyres and now incredibly a fish tank.

"In this latest instance of dumping we've lifted tyres, wood, paper and bottles – two lorry loads of the stuff. Now we're going to send our environmental wardens out.

"We've tried everything in the past and it would appear that it will take further enforcement action to get through to those who don't abide by the law. You have been warned."

A council spokesperson pointed out that the council had provided bins at this location and had issued fixed penalty notices for littering in the past, and that there was simply no excuse to dump litter down the embankments.

"However, it is clear to all that there are still those who are intent in continuing with this irresponsible behaviour," she said,.

Alderman Anderson added that the banks at the roundabout were very steep, making cleaning the verges even harder. He said, "There is one section adjacent to Farlough Road which we cannot clean for health and safety reasons. How people can dump stuff as far down as this is beyond me. We've had enough - dump at the Birches and you will be fined."
