A GRAND total of £4,000 was raised for charity at a recent fashion show organised by the Portadown Rotary and Inner Wheel Clubs.
Fashions were supplied by Portadown shops KaSu, McQuillan’s and Orchid Bridal Studio as well as Solo Shoes (Dungannon).
Rotarians Herbie Smyton (president), Michael Hannath and Andrew Walker were just some of the models who graced the stage at the
Seagoe Hotel in an event which has been hailed by the organisers as a great success, raising much-needed cash for several very worthy charities.
Half the proceeds went to the Rotary Club of Portadown’s Project Rombo, and will be used to help equip health clinics in the village of Rombo, in Kenya.
The Inner Wheel Club will share their £2,000 among Shelter Box and a number of local charities. Shelter Box provides ‘boxes’ of emergency equipment including a tent, stove and sleeping equipment, necessary in times of natural disasters or war situations.
Money raised at the fashion show will provide enough boxes for up to 30 people and presentations on both charities were given by Rotarian Matt Porter, from the Dublin Central district, who spoke about the work that is being carried out by Project Rombo, and David Finan from Lurgan Rotary Club who gave a presentation on Shelter Box on behalf of the Inner Wheel charity.
Project Rombo is split into three areas - water, education and health - and the Rotary Club of Portadown has been raising money for each of the areas.
Water was the focus last Saturday when retired chemist Tom Lee held a sit-out in Portadown town centre in a bid to raise £7,500 to sink five wells, which will provide clean drinking water for Rombo village.
And local schools have already donated £1,000 towards the education part of Project Rombo, while the fashion show was organised to support the area of health.
A raffle was also held on the night, with prizes donated by Nigel O’Hara, Cordner’s Shoes, the Stonebridge Restaurant, Mayfair Businesss Centre, Gabrielle’s florist, Beauty by Mac, Eden beauty salon, and other items donated by members of Rotary and Inner Wheel.
Betty McClurg, chairman of the organising committee, said, “I would like to thank all the members for all their help and support in making the event such a success.”
