THE 85-year-old Loughgall woman knocked down in Portadown town centre last Friday afternoon remains in a critical condition in the Royal Victoria Hospital.
Mrs Elizabeth Winter, a great-grandmother, was crossing the road via the pedestrian crossing
in Mill Avenue, just below Pizza Palazzo, when she was struck by a dumper truck.
Paramedics attended to her at the scene before she was taken to Craigavon Area Hospital and then on to intensive care in the Royal Victoria Hospital.
Traffic across Portadown ground to a halt in the hours after the accident, as the emergency services responded to the incident.
Jean Winter, who is married to Mrs Winter's son Mervyn, said the whole family and community were devastated by the accident.
She said, "Elizabeth has serious leg injuries and serious injuries to other parts of her body but thankfully she has no head injuries and her spine is okay.
"She is conscious at times. I was telling her about her great-grandchildren making cards for her and she smiled and understood what I was saying.
"However, she is in a lot of pain and is still critically ill. "
Despite being in her 80s, Mrs Winter, a mother of four with 11 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren, kept herself extremely fit and active and attended numerous clubs and groups.
On the day of the accident, she had driven into Portadown and parked in her usual spot - the car park at the bottom of the town. It is believed she was making her way into town when the accident happened.
Said her daughter-in-law, "We're still not sure why she was in town. I had told her to let me know if she needed anything and that I would get it for her. We don't know if she slipped going across the road or what happened; it was just a freak accident.
"She is a very active woman. She hates sitting about and is never at home."
