A YOUNG Tandragee woman claims she has lost four different jobs in four years due to an ongoing medical condition which she says doctors at Craigavon Area Hospital have persistently failed to diagnose.
Twenty-one-year-old Gillian Walker now works in the Rates Collection Agency in Portadown, but is still plagued by ongoing abdominal pain which she says her GP has suggested could be endrometriosis - a condition causing inflammation of the lining of
womb.
However, she says the hospital is refusing to carry out a laparoscopy test - examination of the abdominal cavity with a laparascope - which would confirm the diagnosis, because she is too young.
"I really am at the end of my tether now, as these severe abdominal pains have been a regular part of my life now for nearly four years," said Gillian. "I am still waiting for a diagnosis, but when I take the pains next month again, I will definitely not be going to Craigavon - I want to be seen by doctors either at Daisy Hill in Newry or the Lagan Valley Hospital, Lisburn.
"At Craigavon, the only thing they have done over these past number of years has been to give me painkillers and send me home again."
Gillian's most recent attack occurred earlier this month when she was admitted to a ward after being seen at the Accident and Emergency department. "The A and E doctors were great, but the gynae doctors couldn't see me and I was admitted to a surgical ward," she said. "Here, I received more painkillers and was discharged after a dose of morphine! Needless to say, I was back in again after collapsing in work in agony three days later."
The problem was first thought to be trapped wind, gastritis or Irritable Bowel Syndrome and, as there was no pattern to the pain at this stage, Gillian was sent home with painkillers and medicine for indigestion. As the attacks started to occur on a more regular basis, Gillian says she was eventually admitted to hospital, but tests showed up nothing and she was sent home again - with more painkillers.
"They stated there were no more tests they could do, but my GP was pushing the gynae department for a laparoscopy test, which they refused to carry out as they said I was too young," she added. "Unbelieveably, I was also told that it was only the stress of being in hospital which was causing me this excruciating pain every month without fail!
"I really don't understand why doctors are refusing to carry out this test"
A spokesperson for The Southern Health and Social Care Trust said it was unable to comment on any individual cases, but was aware of the patient case. "A formal complaint has been received by the Trust and a full and detailed response provided to the patient," said the spokesperson. "The Trust has a well established patient support and complaint process.
"If any patient feels their concerns have not been fully addressed, we would urge them to contact Trust staff directly."
