Assaulted police officer

A Tandragee man who was abusive to police was given suspended prison sentences last Friday at Craigavon Magistrates Court.

William Edward Austin (27), Market Street Court, Tandragee, admitted disorderly behaviour and assaulting a constable on February 15 this year.

For the assault he was given three months in prison and one month for the disorderly behaviour. Both sentences were suspended for two years.

The court heard that at 1.40am in Mandeville Street he was seen walking up the middle of the street.

When asked to move he stuck two fingers up at police and said ‘shut the f—k up’. He was asked to stop shouting.

Austin later tried to head-butt an officer, making contact with his cheek.

A barrister for Austin said he had moved over from England to assist with his mother’s health care. He added the defendant wanted to put this episode behind him.
