Portadown College pupils met Sky Sports commentator and former Manchester United star Gary Neville just hours before members of their group were subjected to a vicious attack.
This picture shows some of the pupils meeting Neville who was commentating during the Man City versus Man City derby match at Old Trafford on Sunday.
The College group attended the game but were later set upon around 9pm by a mob of up to 40 youths at the Trafford Centre.
The chairman of the College’s board of governors Peter Aiken said five pupils injured in the incident had to be taken to Manchester Royal Infirmary. They were later discharged however, one pupil was advised to attend hospital after sustaining an arm injury which required a sling.
Greater Manchester Police Insp Fahar Zaman said, “This was an unprovoked attack on some young people who were visiting our city.
“It is very disappointing that the memories they are left with will be of this brutal attack.
“We are working with the Trafford Centre to gather evidence and we are following some positive lines of enquiry to find those responsible.”
He said said police were treating the matter “very seriously” and were appealing for witnesses to get in touch.
