Kieran George McCavana, (29), of Hill Street, Gilford, appeared at Craigavon Magistrates Court by videolink from Maghaberry prison.

He admitted a series of offences which happened on July 8 this year at Donaghcloney.

Concurrent three-month prison terms were imposed for criminal damage to a sofa and a door, for threatening to damage a car and attempted criminal damage to a car.

He received two-month sentences, also to run concurrently, for criminal damage to a police car and resisting police. A three-month suspended sentence was also put into operation to run consecutively, making a total of six months in prison.

The court heard that at 10.55pm, police went to an address in Donaghcloney after a report of criminal damage.

McCanava had turned up at the home of his on-off partner and smashed a bottle of Buckfast on her sofa before punching a hole in a door. The injured party’s sister then saw him kick at a car belonging to her sister and saying: “I’m going to burn this car out.”

McCavana then kicked a wing mirror of the police vehicle. Later when interviewed he said he got violent under the influence of alcohol.

A barrister for McCavana said that his client had shown a degree of remorse to his ex-partner and police officers for having to deal with him in his state of utter intoxication.

He added that the defendant was in breach of a suspended sentence imposed on May 18 and he had been in custody since August 3.

Deputy District Judge Sean O’Hare said it was clear the defendant had a problem withalcohol. Imposing the custodial sentences he also ordered McCavana to pay £68.41 compensation for damage to the police vehicle and a £25 offender’s levy.
