Illegal dumping has occurred once again - this time, in the Birches.

Local DUP MLA Sydney Anderson has condemned those responsible for carrying out the illegal dumping at Derrkeeran Road.

Mr Anderson commented:

“In recent days a substantial amount of builder’s rubble - including pieces of timber and concrete blocks, as well as other items - have been dumped at Derrykeeran Road. I totally condemn those responsible for carrying out this illegal dumping as such actions are harmful to the environment and also are a blight on the countryside.”

Illegal dumping - or fly-tipping - has been a reoccurring issue, not only near the Birches but throughout the borough. The practice is a criminal offence, but the threat of large fines and even prison sentences still fail to act as deterrents to those who choose to resort to it.

“It is unacceptable that such fly-tipping is taking place because there are proper and legitimate ways of disposing of waste building materials and other items of waste,” explained Mr Anderson.

“A couple of months ago, I highlighted the fact that tyres had been dumped at this location. These were later removed by council officials at a cost to the local ratepayer. I was therefore angered to learn that, in recent days, a similar occurrence of dumping has taken place once again.

“More needs to be done to deter those responsible for such activity and I would urge people to be vigilant and report any such actions to the ABC Council.”

The DUP MLA voiced his commitment to curbing the practice in the borough, promising to meet with officials to seek a solution.

“This type of behaviour is difficult to stop in the countryside, but I will be liaising with my council colleagues and other relevant officials again to see if more resources can be directed towards deterring the continuation of this illegal dumping,” he said.

Mr Anderson concluded:

“It is essential that this activity is properly dealt with because no one wants to see our countryside being damaged by such senseless actions.”

If you see anyone dumping waste illegally, report it to the Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council.
