Man due on in court on Black murder charge

A 33-year-old man has been charged with the murder of prison officer David Black.

He is due to appear at Craigavon Magistrates’ Court this morning.

It follows extensive searches in the Victoria Street area of Lurgan earlier this week.

Mr Black had been planning his retirement.

The man due to appear in court charged with his murder, has also been charged with possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life.

The PSNI thanked Gardai for their help in the operation.

Prison officer David Black, a father of two, was shot dead as he drove along from his home in Cookstown, Co Tyrone to Maghaberry prison just outside Lisburn, Co Antrim in November 2012.

David Black was the first prison officer to be murdered in Northern Ireland in 20 years. A new dissident republican paramilitary group calling itself the IRA admitted the killing. The 52-year-old father-of-two was shot from a passing car at around 7.30am as he drove to work on the M1 in Co Armagh on November 1. He had been driving to Maghaberry jail.
