Sex Abuse Scandal: Police arrest former Celtic coach in North

Police investigating allegations of historical sexual abuse of children in football have arrested a former Glasgow Celtic coach in the North of Ireland.

Jim McCafferty, 71, who was involved in football in Scotland and Ireland in the 1980s, was arrested by the PSNI after he walked into a police station in Belfast.

The arrest comes after an interview Mr. McCafferty gave to The Irish Daily Mirror.

McCafferty, who is originally from Wishaw, North Lanarkshire, now lives in Belfast.

The 71 year-old was a former kitman for Celtic, Falkirk and Hibernian F.C.

Detective Superintendent Deirdre Bones, from the PSNI’s public protection branch, said: “A 71-year-old male has been arrested by detectives after presenting himself at a station in Belfast.

“He was arrested on suspicion of sexual offences against children in Northern Ireland. He is currently helping police with their inquiries.”
