Drink driver told police he had been trying to push car home

After he had skidded off the road a Portadown man said he had been trying to push the car home after he had been drinking.

He was Shaun McIlkenny (21), Ballyoran Park, and last Wednesday at Craigavon Magistrates Court he was fined £150 and banned for 12 months for driving with excess alcohol on January 18 this year.

He was also fined £200 and disqualified for three months for not having insurance and fined £75 with a three-month ban for driving without due care and attention.

The court heard that at 4.45am at Rose Cottages in Portadown a car was found abandoned in the road.

The defendant approached and said he was the owner. He told police he had been trying to push it home. But police noticed skid marks behind the vehicle leading on to the footpath. They smelled intoxicating liquor on the defendant’s breath and an evidential test gave a reading of 75.

Mr Gabriel Ingram, representing the defendant, said McIlkenny had been drinking at a friend’s house. He added that the defendant foolishly decided to drive.
