Residents '˜sick sore and tired' of dog poo

Residents are '˜sick, sore and tired' of side-stepping dog poo throughout the borough, a local councillor has claimed.

Locals have inundated DUP councillor Mark Baxter with complaints about the excrement covered pavements.

The councillor said he has become ‘increasingly frustrated’ with irresponsible dog owners who fail to scoop the poop.

The DUP Group Leader highlighted the extent of the problem across the entire borough at a meeting of Armagh, Banbridge and Craigavon Council’s Environmental Services committee last week.

He called for more proactive and robust measures to be put in place, and suggested channelling resources to see tangible results across the area.

He said: “I believe dog fouling, while it has always been a major problem, seems to be getting worse.

“I raised it at the committee meeting and there was broad agreement with other councillors and they all agreed that more robust action must be taken in tackling the problem and new initiatives must be explored to send a clear message to the totally irresponsible dog owners.

“Officials have given me assurances that work is ongoing around the issue.

“I used the opportunity to convey the depth of feeling within the community and I welcome the fact that this is being brought back to us.

“To me this is a very relevant issue and I’m inundated day and daily with complaints from residents sick sore and tired of avoiding mess on footpaths with children and pram wheels often bearing the brunt.

“I will continue to lobby on behalf of the people and will be raising the issue once again at the full council sitting at the end of this month and, in spearheading a campaign, will be hoping to secure a definite commitment and consensus from fellow councillors the message is clear ‘It’s your dog, your responsibility’.”
