A former joinery apprentice has embarked on his second training period but this time as a deacon-intern within Seagoe parish.

The Rev Geoff Hamilton has been ordained to serve in the Portadown parish, and will remain in the position until June.

He will assist the rector, the Rev Terence Cadden, and as well as learning on the job and doing pastoral care, will also write a dissertation as part of his Master’s degree in Ministry.

Rev Hamilton, a student at the Church of Ireland Theological Institute, said he was really looking forward to participating in everyday parish ministry.

He added, “During these past two years I have valued the opportunity to study with a great group of ordinands. One of the privileges has been listening to people share their story of how God has called them into ordained ministry. I have wrestled with the idea of ordination for nearly 30 years!”

Rev Hamilton left school at 16 and attended Craigavon Training Centre before serving a joinery apprenticeship in his home town of Lurgan.

Aged 25, he moved to Montevideo as a mission partner with the South American Mission Society (SAMS) and worked with the Anglican church within a community development initiative. When he returned home he worked for SAMS throughout Ireland as their development officer.

He is married to Jill who works for Connor diocese as a children’s worker.
