I thought I had seen it all from Craigavon Borough Council, but plans to spend £100,000 to ‘celebrate’ Portadown’s 400th anniversary - two or possibly three years late, really takes the biscuit. Is there nothing this pathetic council enjoys more than spending the ratepayers’ money? Please no more street festivals, town centre plazas or ‘fun days’ - this town needs condemned not celebrated. What actually IS there to celebrate? - empty shops, overzealous traffic wardens, high rates and constant roadworks. Likewise, I dread to think what is going to happen next year to mark the 40th anniversary of Craigavon Borough Council. Four decades of poor housing, squabbling councillors, equally high rates and broken promises - now that really is something NOT worth celebrating - isn’t it?
In reply to G.S.D in the Portadown Times, it was totally insulting. Nick Griffin was correct, with the influx of foreigners local people who have lived and worked all their lives in Portadown (and paid taxes) have had to sit back and watch foreigners reaping the benefits ie. jobs, housing, welfare etc. This is the view of most working-class people; we feel we are the foreigners in our own country. You have only to walk down any Portadown street and you would think you were in another country. Let the truth be told. TAX PAYER (via email)
Sinn Fein should be a ashamed of themselves. This is about a soldier who gave his life for them and for us.
I hope when the council spend this money on our town they make a few parking spaces for bicycles as there isn’t anywhere to leave them. I saw a bicycle chained to a lamp post last week and it had fallen down on footpath which was a danger to shoppers!
Just a question for our council; could you please explain how our rates have gone up? As my property isn’t worth what it stated on my bill as property prices have gone down considerably. Surely every household would need re-rated to come in line with value?
Apart from having the dead soldier’s name being put on its rightful place the War Memorial, the unionist people should now lobby all their politicians to have a street in the borough named after Neal Turkington, he was a better man than those who opposed the motion. John
Well done to Colin McCusker for not giving up on trying to solve the Garvaghy Road dispute and getting his motion passed by Craigavon Council last Tuesday night. Sounds like a sensible approach.
I was informed by Craigavon Borough Council waste management staff at their Carn premises that there was no blue, green or brown bin calendars being published due to ‘cuts’. That would have been something useful to the public, yet they spend thousands on meaningless and unnecessary things.
It’s an absolute disgrace that a hometown soldier can’t even be rewarded with getting his name on the war memorial. What type of people are Sinn Féin? He was doing a good deed for his country, Great Britain. Why do Sinn Fein have a say on the matter? They are an absolute disgrace to our country!
The only party to ever solve the Garvaghy Road problem has been the Ulster Unionists. The DUP have done nothing.
Is Mary Peters’ goal medal at Munich 40 years ago not going to be commemorated? Or is that too on the council’s ‘long finger’?
If the UUP couldn’t give public acknowledgement to what Portadown District have done just because the DUP proposed it - then shame on them.
Yet again the UUP have put party politics first and divided unionism over parades. Shame on the vote-splitting fireside Orangemen.
What possible objection could the UUP have to calling for an end of the Parades Commission practice of rewarding Garvaghy Road intransigence other than the fact that it was proposed by the DUP? Why can’t they just catch themselves on?
