Why it hasn’t been a great year for the DRD

As 2012 ends, the DRD will hardly look back on the year with any sort of satisfaction, due to numerous ‘faux pas’ in the past 12 months. Starting with the re-tarmacing of Edward Street and Portmore Street’s footpaths, followed by the Armagh Road - Brownstown Road layout and traffic controversy. After that, there was the furore regarding the new traffic system and all the trouble with the resurfacing at Kernan. Then it was the ruining of the Northway. But they saved their ‘party piece’ to the end with the nightmare at Edenderry and Bridge Street. From the High Street junction to outside Bann House, it is a total joke with confusion and chaos everywhere. At other times of the year, there have been other closures and roadworks but Bridge Street and the Asda ‘invasion’ certainly tops the lot. So what does 2013 bring for the DRD? The continual neglect of the Annagh area and more PR disasters. No changes then.

I am a responsible dog owner who walks the Tandragee Road, however there is that much fouling that I have to walk elsewhere. People should learn to pick up after their dogs, and if not fines should be imposed.

Congratulations to Tommy Hanlon on his MBE in the New Year’s Honours list - throughly deserved. Also in 2012, Kenny Vennard received the Daily Mirror Pride Of Britain Award, John Hunter was presented with the Mayor’s Award for Community Service, Victor Pickering was given Life Membership of 1st Portadown BB Old Boys’ Association while Raymond Adams’ service was also recognised. These men have all given many, many years to the Boys’ Brigade movement and while they appreciate the honours that have come their way, they are not there for the glory but for the organisation which they serve and their Real Captain - Jesus Christ.
