Your views on town’s parking situation
WE used our Facebook page to ask for your views on the parking situation for business owners in the town centre following Simon Dougan’s claim that he may leave Portadown over the number of tickets he has received. Here is a selection of your responses. Like us at www.facebook/portadowntimes to join in the debate and register to comment on individual stories at www.portadowntimes.co.uk
There should be concessions made for business owners in the town regarding parking. I would hate to see any more businesses close because of lack of flexibility for owners. It’s depressing enough as it is. I remember watching Sharon, the delightful owner of Zio’s, struggle to find a parking space near her work whilst heavily pregnant. Perhaps Proprietor Parking Badges should be considered? Provided Simon did not endanger anyone, he should be pardoned on this occasion. Cherith Edgar
Parking in town is a disgrace and it’s no wonder shoppers head to the free parking at the shopping centres. I agree with the one-hour limit otherwise you cannot get a space for a quick message, opticians, haircut. But the car parks should be free! Aaron Caddell
It is essential for many businesses to be able to park a van outside their premises for loading/unloading of goods and a concession should be made for this. I was in town for the first time in about six months today and was shocked at how few people were about. Portadown town centre trade is fading rapidly and something needs to be done to revive it. Tracie Jenkinson
Parking spaces for shop owners is an idea but where are they going to come from except out of the current ones on the streets around the town. That’s fine but then there wouldn’t be any in town car parking on the streets as shop owners/workers would have used them all up.
It’s a catch 22 situation. Workers use them and then you won’t get the passing trade. No customers equals no trade! If you watch people, they want to be able to park outside every shop and they don’t want to walk! That’s why I avoid the town unless absolutely necessary. You’ve got to feel sorry for those who have to deliver into the shops, with nowhere to stop and the few loading bays being used by inconsiderate drivers. The red coats are too soft when it comes to this. Maybe time to look into pedestrianisation of the town? Michael O’Neill
