A £300,000 improvement scheme for the Birches M1 roundabout is scheduled to be completed in the new year.
The announcement was made last week by Regional Development Minister Danny Kennedy when he visited the BARN community Group last week (Birches Area Rural Network) to see at first hand the issues facing the local community.
Mr Kennedy said, “As minister it’s always extremely useful to get out on site and to see at first hand the issues affecting local communities. BARN have been lobbying me on this issue for a number of months and I have become well aware of the passion the local community have for this roundabout, which is essentially the front door to the Birches Rural area.
“I am delighted to have been able to announce this major investment for the strategic road network in Craigavon and the Birches community. I would like to thank the members of BARN for their invitation to visit their area, their very warm welcome and the hospitality that was afforded to me.”
Robert Martin, chairman of BARN, said, “We as a community group are delighted by this announcement by the Roads Minister. The roundabout is one of the key themes in our Village Plan for the Birches and Tartaraghan and to have achieved this result for our community has come as a real boost as we continue to lobby our politicians to improve our area. I would like to place on record my thanks to Danny Kennedy for taking the time to visit the Birches, as well as committing over £300k to reinstate the roundabout.
“I would also wish to thank Councillor Colin McCusker for his unrelenting support since we first approached him earlier this year, and no doubt the pressure he has applied on our behalf has delivered this fantastic result.”
Colin McCusker said “Once again Danny Kennedy has clearly demonstrated his commitment to Craigavon, with another major investment in the road infrastructure for the area. This is a very welcome boost for the Birches community.”
