When he was drunk a young Portadown man tried to steal a tractor, Craigavon Magistrates Court heard last Friday.
Nineteen year old Sean Fitzpatrick, Rose Cottages, Portadown, admitted attempting to take the tractor without the owner’s consent on January 12 this year.
The court heard police were called to the injured party’s address following a report of an attempt to steal one of his tractors.
The defendant ran off but the injured party gave chase and Fitzpatrick stopped running. He was waiting when police arrived.
The tractor owner said the tool box had been rifled through as if someone had been looking for a key to start the tractor. There was no damage to the vehicle.
A solicitor for Fitzpatrick said he was in such a state of intoxication he had no recollection of the incident or being in the tractor. He had taken a considerable amount of alcohol.
District Judge, Mr Mervyn Bates, said the defendant had a history of motoring offences including driving with excess alcohol.
He said it would have been too frightening to contemplate what would have happened if Fitzpatrick had taken this tractor.
He adjourned the case until March 14 for a pre-sentence report and released the defendant on his own bail of £300.
