The River Bann in Portadown burst its banks on New Year’s Eve after yet more heavy overnight rain.

Torrential rain overnight on Monday saw widespread flooding on the Bann at the Bann Boulevard and placing the popular walkway under several feet of water. It lapped up Shillington’s Quay and flooded the Bann Meadows.

The problem isn’t as pronounced as it once was following the lowering of Lough Neagh many years ago. Before this the Bann in Portadown would have flooded for weeks on end. It occasionally flooded houses in the old Francis Street and Wilson Street area, but both have long since been demolished.

The floods followed last week’s high winds which saw homes and businesses losing power and trees felled across the borough.
