Markethill Festival got under way with a table quiz last night (Thursday) in the masonic hall.

It’s just one of a series of events running until August 6 with something for everyone along the way.

Today (Friday), The Game Keepers Lodge on Tandragee Road will host an open garden for Tiny Life NI and Children’s Cancer Fund from 2pm to 8pm. It’s open again at the same time on Saturday.

Running from Friday will be the Art Exhibition & Photography Competition in the Small Memorial Hall.

On Monday from 7pm will be the sponsored Family Fun Run. Participating individuals or groups to assemble at Lily Pink. Street Collection in aid of Meningitis Research and Alzheimer’s.

At 7.45pm will be a Fancy Dress Parade. Classes – Prettiest, Funniest and Most Original, divided into four age groups – Pre-School, P1 to P4, P5 to P7, Other ages, sponsored by Dalzells of Markethill.

And at 8pm there will be the festival’s official opening by Mr James Maxwell, principal of Markethill High School. Junior Miss and Master Markethill, Glamorous Grandmother, and Festival Queen will be chosen.

Also on the night will be the Hat Competition (8.20pm), Open air dancing to Kenny Paul (8.30pm) and a display of Racing Cars on Main Street (8pm).

On Tuesday at 2pm don’t miss the Scarecrow Competition in the Primary School Field. Admission fee 50p per person. Bring your scarecrow and win a prize. S7.00 p.m. On Main Street – Slow Bicycle Race sponsored by Alistair Robinson of Cycleology, Armagh. Safety Helmets must be worn.

They’ll be ‘sticking the boot in’ at 7.45pm with the Wellie Boot tossing competition in the Primary School Field. Wellie boot will be supplied.

At the same venue at 8pm will be the It’s a Knock-out Competition. Teams of six including at least two females per team.

Entry Fee £5 per team, competing for The McWilliams Perpetual Cup. Wednesday, July 30 sees a Novelty Pet Show in Primary School field at 2pm and Markethill Horse & Pony Driving Club Ltd. Annual Show.

Highlight for Thursday will be the Annual Treasure Hunt from Village Inn from 7pm. Entry £5 per person including supper.
