Call for action at spot of fatal Richhill crash

MLA William Irwin, who has been in contact with officials, said the corner on which the accident occurred had been a source of worry among local people for some time.

He added there had been a number of accidents where vehicles had left the road and ended up in a farmer’s field.

Mr Irwin said, “I know it is quite a hilly section with one particularly sharp bend which has been the scene of a number of accidents in recent times. I have raised the matter with Transport NI officials and have requested that they look carefully at this section of the Legacorry Road and see what changes could be made to reduce the risk of accidents.”

He said it is important that every effort is made to make the route as safe as possible. “As drivers, we all have a duty to drive with extreme care at all times and importantly in these winter months drive to the conditions,” he said.

“Our roads have sadly claimed many lives over 2015 and now into 2016 and we must remain very vigilant when travelling across the province. We must take the greatest care.”

The Newry & Armagh DUP MLA, who attended Shannon’s funeral service, said, “It was a very emotional and fitting tribute to a young lady who was so obviously full of energy and enthusiasm for life.

“I trust the wider family circle will know some comfort in the days ahead through the support shown by Shannon’s very strong and wide circle of friends.”

Cllr Paul Berry said, “I know both families concerned and it is very sad that a family has lost a beautiful daughter... Our thoughts are also with the young lady who is seriously ill in the Royal Victoria Hospital.”
