Cash to be spent on play parks

Close to £100,000 is to be spent on upgrading children’s play parks in the area, with some councillors pushing for a further spend of £150,000.

The project will involve the repainting of equipment as well safety surfaces being repaired in six play areas including Edenvilla, Drumilly Green, Abercorn Park, Beaumont Square, Tannaghmore and Taghnevan.

Four playgrounds are also set to have new equipment installed.

The total cost of this work is £98,496.

Councillor Darren Causby proposed an additional spend of £150,000, backed by fellow DUP members, before this work began which would result in one tender for the project rather than two.

However, it was decided to go ahead with the initial spend and explore the additional request in September.

Council has also pledged to look at rural areas that don’t have play parks.

During discussions at council, Director of Leisure Services, Stephen Fraser, said that a brand new play park cost in the region of £80,000.
