A young mother has spoken of her terror after vandals torched a vacant house in Garvaghy Road in the early hours of Sunday morning.
Rita Soares, originally from East Timor, described how six families were evacuated as the fire raged through the terrace house, “and we could only watch in hope that our homes would be saved”.
The house – number 71 – was gutted as 20 firefighters from four appliances tackled the blaze, their main aim being to prevent it from spreading along the open roofspace joining the homes.
Said District Fire Commander Victor Spence, “The first team on the scene stopped it from spreading to the houses on either side, numbers 69 and 73. But both houses suffered smoke and water damage and the families have been given temporary accommodation elsewhere.”
Mrs Soares, who moved here with her extended family seven years ago, lives at number 75 with husband Carlinho and son Laressi (3). She said,“The police evacuated us at about 3.30, along with the other families, and we were frightened that our house would be affected too,” she said. “But the firefighters did a great job in putting out the fire.
