Ulster Carpets honorary president Mr Walter Wilson has passed away.

Mr Wilson was one of the family of five of the late Walter and Jean Wilson. His father set up the company just prior to the Second World War, and it celebrated its 75th anniversary earlier this year.

Happily, Walter (84) was able to play an important role in the celebrations and cut the anniversary cake at the gala event to celebrate the three-quarters of a century.

He is the third of the original family to pass away, with brother John having died in 2009 and sister Annabel Fforde three years ago. He is survived by sister Mary Warre (London) and by brother Edward, chairman of the company.

Walter was pre-deceased by his wife Alys some 21 years ago and is survived by four daughters – his son died in a road accident in 1991. There are 12 grandchildren.

Around 500 attended Tuesday’s funeral at the family church in Tullylish and burial was in the adjoining cemetery.

A full obituary will be carried in next week’s Portadown Times.
