interfered with care of patients at hospital

A 27-year-old woman who interfered with the care for patients and caused distress to families at a hospital was put on probation last Wednesday at Craigavon Magistrates Court.

Danielle Sarah Bernadett Smith, Drumellan Gardens, Craigavon, had pleaded guilty to a charge of disorderly behaviour.

Sentencing had been adjourned from a previous court so that a pre-sentence report could be obtained.

The court heard that on January 1 this year at 1.20pm police went to Craigavon Area Hospital after a report of a female being removed by security.

When she saw the police Smith began to swear at them and she was asked to stop shouting.

A member of the hospital staff said Smith had been running across the area, interfering with the care of patients and causing distress to families.

As she was being taken to the police vehicle she tried to pull away and had to be handcuffed. In the vehicle she calmed down and police brought her home.

A solicitor representing the defendant said the reason she was at the hospital was that her friend had collapsed and Smith had attended with her.

He added that because she was so drunk she could not remember much of what happened. She had not had taken drink since this incident.

District Judge, Mr Mervyn Bates, said there was nothing on her record since 2011 and imposed a period of probation for 18 months.
