A Portadown man who said he was attacked and robbed of his benefit money was fined £200 last Wednesday at Craigavon Magistrates Court for wasting police time.
Thirty-eight-year-old Gary Noel Townsley, Magowan House, Portadown, was charged with wasteful employment of police time by making a false report on September 7 last year.
The court heard that the defendant reported to police that he had been assaulted at the Magowan Buildings car park and the benefit money he had just collected had been stolen from him.
He went to the DHSS office and claimed for money from the emergency fund.
Police investigated the assault and on CCTV saw the defendant take a different route than the one he had said.
He was still adamant about the assault although the CCTV did not correlate with his account.
A solicitor for Townsley said he had an alcohol addiction and suffered from depression.
Bail of £200 was set for Townsley to appeal against the sentence.
