Man was just over drink drive limit

After drinking two pints of beer a 24-year-old man thought he was fit to drive but when tested he was found to be just over the limit.

Dovydas Kulikauskas, Killycomain Grove, Portadown, admitted driving with excess alcohol in blood and not having insurance on September 18 last year when he appeared last Wednesday at Craigavon Magistrates Court.

For the drink driving offence he was fined £250 and banned from driving for 12 months.

He was fined £250, ordered to pay a £15 offender’s levy, and banned for 12 months for not having insurance.

The judge said that he was suitable for the drink driving course and if he completed it his ban would be reduced by three months.

The court heard that at 11.50pm in Church Street, Portadown, because of the speed a car was being driven police suspected the driver had consumed alcohol.

They spoke to the defendant who gave a reading of 54 in a preliminary test while in Lurgan custody suite an evidential reading was 40.

Kulikauskas opted to take a blood test and the reading was 87, seven in excess of the limit.

A solicitor representing the defendant said he had two previous entries on his record for no insurance offences.

He explained there had not been enough money in his client’s account to pay for the insurance. He no longer had the car.

The solicitor said the defendant had two pints of beer and thought he would be fit to drive.

Deputy District Judge Neil Rafferty warned Kulikauskas that if he committed any further driving offences he faced the likelihood of going to jail.
