THIS year’s Mullahead and District ploughing match has been cancelled, the organisers have confirmed.
The largely wet weather in January and early February initially forced the postponement of the popular event, which was scheduled for the last Saturday in February at Richardson’s field near Portadown.
The organisers initially hope to stage the event later in March, but have confirmed it will not take place at all.
This is just the fourth time in 99 years that the ploughing match has been cancelled.
A spokesman for the Mullahead society said, “Unfortunately due to adverse weather conditions and the unavailability of another suitable date, the Mullahead and District Ploughing Match for 2013 is cancelled. The society is extremely disappointed, but it is the only responsible decision that could be made at this time. Hope to see you all on February 22, 2014.
“In our 99-year history this is only the fourth year the match has been cancelled, and only the second due to weather conditions. The first being in 1947 because of snow. The other cancellations were during the Second World War, and in 2001 due to the foot and mouth outbreak.”
