Police are investigating what was desrcibed as an '˜unprovoked' assault in Moira at the weekend.

A man was assaulted in the Main Street area of the village in the early hours of Sunday, May 29, and police have appealed for witnesses to come forward with information.

According to a police spokesperson: “A number of persons making their way home were attacked by three males who proceeded to throw punches at a male in the group before resorting to then throwing cans of beer at them.

“The three suspects then made off in the direction of Meeting Street and are described as between 25-40 years old, one having a V-shaped hair cut wearing a blue and white striped t-shirt, one was heavy built wearing a brown overcoat and one was wearing a black coat.

Police are keen to speak to any persons who may have seen an altercation and to contact Lisburn PSNI on a 101 quoting Police reference 261, 29/05/16.”

Lisburn’s Deputy Mayor Councillor Alexander Redpath has said he is “appalled” at the attack.

Mr Redpath, added he was outraged at the incident in the village and urged anyone with information about the assault to speak to the police as soon as possible.

“I’m appalled that this sort of violent and anti social behaviour has visited the streets of Moira,” said Mr Redpath. “This is extremely uncharacteristic for the village.

“I would urge anyone with information to contact the PSNI on the non emergency number 101.

“As a community we have to work together to ensure that this incident is not repeated.”
