A Portuguese woman who has lost more than four stone in weight has been named Woman of the Year in her Portadown slimming group.
Sandra Pereira (39), a mother-of-one, found herself piling on the pounds after she moved to Northern Ireland 10 years ago.
She said, “I was here on my own and I went through a few problems. My mother was seriously ill and nearly died and not being near her put a lot of pressure on me.
“I was eating take-away food and sweet stuff and just didn’t have the patience to stick to a proper diet.”
When Sandra returned to Portugal for a visit, she was aware that her former colleagues were surprised at her weight gain. “I could see the looks on their faces,” she said.
Sandra, who has an eight-year-old son Janith, tried different diets and attending a gym, but nothing worked.
She added, “I asked my doctor to get me an appointment with a nutritionist and he told me to try Slimming World first.”
Sandra joined the Rugby Club branch in November weighing 16 stone 2lb and now tips the scales at just 11 stone 13lbs.
She said, “With Slimming World I learned how to change my eating habits and I also exercise by walking and doing zumba.”
A major upside is the new friends Sandra has made through joining Slimming World. She said, “Having all these friends in the group has really helped me with losing weight and also given me a new family.
“I feel more confident, healthier and happier.”
