The search is continuing for a Portadown man who has been missing since yesterday’s tragic angling accident in the Republic.
A 27-year-old-year member of a Portadown angling club died after a boat capsized at Lough Ree, County Westmeath on Thursday afternoon. A second man remains in a critical condition in hospital while the third man is missing.
Searches on Friday have been hampered by poor weather.
The young man who died is a relative of Craigavon Mayor, Councillor Colin McCusker, who said, “Words can’t describe how we’re all feeling at the minute, there are young children involved who are going to be left without a father and we’re just devastated.”
SDLP Upper Bann MLA Dolores Kelly said, “This is absolutely heartbreaking news. People in the community are shocked at this tragedy. My thoughts and prayers are with the man’s family.”
Sinn Féin Councillor Gemma McKenna has expressed her sympathies to the family. She said, “The thoughts and sympathies of the entire community will go to this man’s family. Our thoughts also go out to the families of the other two men involved in this tragic incident.”
DUP Councillor Darryn Causby tweeted, “Devastating news from Westmeath about fishing trip, community in complete shock, Portadown is a town very much hurting and worried.”
The search for the third man is continuing.
