UPPER Bann MP David Simpson is taking to his bed for a couple of days in September - even though he’s feeling hale and hearty.
The Honourable Member won’t sleep a wink, though, as he will be pushing a bed for about 30 miles around his constituency, with more than a little help from his friends.
The bed push will raise funds to provide a special therapy chair (or chairs) for the Mandeville Cancer Unit at Craigavon Area Hospital, with Mr Simpson and friends starting at Lurgan Hospital, pushing gamely on to Banbridge via Waringstown, and from there to Scarva, Gilford and thence to Portadown. And after all that, he probably WILL take to his bed for a good, long sleep!
“It’s a wonderful unit and a very worthy cause,” said Mr Simpson, who will be accompanied by his DUP Assembly members, councillors, staff and friends, all under starters orders from the Member of Parliament!
“I did a similar trek back in 2009 for Help for Heroes,” said Mr Simpson. “The constituents gave generously and the total was over £12,000. That would provide three chairs for the Mandeville Unit and would be marvellous, but we’ll wait and see. One would be good, two great and three terrific.”
He launched the project at the unit on Wednesday. Staff thanked him profusely and are fully behind the effort, with just about every family in the constituency affected - directly or indirectly - by the disease.
Donations are already trickling in, with businesses and individuals donating, and the Simpson team hopes this will reach a climax on the dates - Friday and Saturday, September 7 and 8.
If anyone wants to donate right away, they can do so at the three DUP constituency office - Thomas Street in Portadown; Lurgan’s High Street; and Rathfriland Street in Banbridge.
